Welcome to Cognitive Dissonance!

Catherine Groves

In "Welcome to Cognitive Dissonance!" Catherine Groves explores an unpleasant psychological condition that happens to mirror the basis of Christian*New Age Quarterly. Is it possible the very concept of Christian*New Age Quarterly — which actively seeks to present a diversity of often opposing viewpoints — tends to inhibit readership expansion, as many people avoid exposure to ideas that might conflict with their own? Apparently such confrontation brings about a disquieting inner dissonance that begs for its reduction.

Still, as Groves points out, meeting up with beliefs, ideas and values that counter our own leads to growth. How else are we to learn? Indeed, how else can we more intimately understand what we profess if we barricade ourselves from anything that, by contrast, can help sharpen our own assumptions? And what does this say about interreligious dialog in general?

Similarities

M.J. Makransky

A delightful essay — chosen to balance Groves' "Welcome to Cognitive Dissonance!" — "Similarities" explores the many concepts Christians and New Agers share. M.J. Makransky points out that what, superficially, might appear to be differences, often are similarities when examined more deeply. This piece hails from our January-March 1992 issue.
