Through the Editor's Eyes The Difference Between Night and Day |
Catherine Groves |
Do we go to bed at night just so we can replenish ourselves for the next day? Is that the purpose of one-third give or take of our lives? Many of us seem to place more significance on our awake time than on our slumber. Are we missing something vital? In this editorial, Catherine Groves explores the phenomenon of dreaming in her own life, in our cultural idioms, in the bible and in New Age spirituality in general, as well as in song. |
A Blast from The Folly of Certitude: The Case for Believing in What We Know |
Robert Arias |
This essay was first published in our May-October 2007 issue. Here, Robert Arias probes the relationship between the rational and nonrational. Opening his piece with a misunderstanding and consequential friction between Islamic and Christian sectors, Arias views the Muslim wholehearted acceptance of the doctrine of divine creation vis-à-vis the Christian mistrust of creation's fundamental reality. There appears to be "a disconnect between our method of knowledge and our method of belief." He asks, "Are knowledge and faith fundamentally distinct faculties of the mind.... Or, rather, are they partial and inherently complementary means of arriving at a holistic understanding of the universe and our place within it?" |
