Through the Editor's Eyes

The Spark of Life

Catherine Groves

Catherine Groves speaks of her vexation over a number of matters: from finding a topic to write about for this issue to annoying physical afflictions. But then her mood does a somersault as she tells of her relief at reconnecting with Arthur C. Ford, Sr., founder of The PEN.

Groves continues with "The Spark of Life," which reflects upon the spark that all sentient beings experience as life, no matter their shape or size. What implications might this have upon the assumption that humans are superior to all other life forms?

A Blast from
Our Past

This Life of Metaphors

Robert M. Price

Drawing upon the episode "Darmok" from Star Trek®: The Next Generation, Robert M. Price tackles the tricky nature of communication. What if different peoples do not share even the common ground of knowing how the other frames and expresses thought?

Through the Editor's Eyes: The End Unravels the Beginning

Catherine Groves

True, even if unusual, this issue shares two essays from Catherine Groves."The End Unravels the Beginning" takes a look at aging and how it seems we lose so many of our hard-learned skills as we approach our golden years. But what if we were to consider it backward: from later to earlier? Just for one example, when we are elderly, many of us stumble and fall as we learn to rely on assistance devices, such as walkers. When we are toddlers, we stumble and fall as we learn to take our first baby steps. Might we gain some perspective if we approach our lives from a different angle?
